Product Care - Get the Most from Your Gear
Here at Finisterre we build our products with meticulous attention to detail, but once they leave us to take up residence in your wardrobe, it’s up to you to take care of your gear.
Everything we make is built to stand the test of time, but we need you to do your bit too. Caring for your product in the right way is a big part of making sure it lasts for as long as possible, to minimize its impact. So, whether you’ve always sought the best way to wash that woolly jumper or want to know what the deal is with denim, you’re in the right place.
Wool is an incredible fibre. Amongst its many useful properties, wool is naturally antibacterial, meaning it actually requires far less washing than most people think. Unless you’ve got a stain on your favourite knitwear or it’s genuinely starting to smell, we’d recommend not washing it.
If you do get to the point where you need to wash your knitwear, make sure you closely follow the advice on the washcare label of that particular jumper as instructions differ depending on the yarn blend used. Either hand-wash or use a delicate wool cycle at 30°C degrees, and don’t use fabric softener! Never spin or tumble dry knitwear either, as this can lead to felting of the wool and shrinkage. Instead, dry flat and re-shape whilst damp to avoid stretching. Cool iron only, never bleach and be aware that dark colours may transfer when damp.
From our classic t-shirts and super soft sweats to our hardy legwear, organic cotton is a fantastically versatile fabric and really simple to care for. Wash at 30°C with similar colours, don’t tumble dry and only use a low spin if needed. Dry flat, away from direct sunlight or heat, use a cool iron and do not bleach. For garment dyed items, dry inside-out to avoid colour fading. If in doubt, always check the washcare label.
Much like wool, denim really doesn’t need a whole lot of washing. And, the more you wash jeans the faster they’ll fade, so we recommend doing it as little as possible. If you want to freshen them up without the aid of a washing machine, hanging them in the bathroom for a quick steam while you shower is easy, and saves on water consumption.
Make sure to follow the washcare label for the best results. Turn your jeans inside-out and machine wash at 30°C with similar colours. Use a gentle cycle if possible, cool iron, never tumble dry and please, please, please do not bleach. Remember, dark colours may transfer when damp and this is especially true of the natural indigo dye in our jeans.
Whether it’s our tried and tested base layers or superfine knitwear, Merino (like all wool) retains its natural antibacterial properties. That’s why our base layers can be worn for days without washing and still feel fresh – so you can wear more and wash less.
Wash your Merino at 30°C on a gentle wool cycle with low spin. Wash with similar colours, do not use fabric softener or bleach, and never ever tumble dry Merino! Reshape while damp and dry on the line, using a cool iron if necessary, and do not dry over a direct heat source, like a radiator. Always be sure to check the washcare label for specific instructions.
Yes, with all those adventures you take it on, your outerwear needs a wash sometimes too! Given the durable recycled polyester fabric and FC-Free DWR coating we use for all of our jackets, you shouldn’t need to do this too often, but when the time come’s here’s what you’ll need to do.
Machine wash your jacket at 30°C on a gentle cycle. Tumble dry on a low setting for 20 minutes to help the Finisterre Engineered Insulation regain loft and to restore water repellency and be sure not to wring dry. Do not bleach or fabric softener on your jacket and do not iron or dry clean. Re-proof when necessary using Nikwax® products or you can use our online Lived & Loved service where we’ll do it for you.
On the rare occasion you need to wash your waterproof jacket, here are the instructions to follow. Always make sure to read the washcare label on the specific product for the correct instructions.
Wash your waterproofs at 30°C on a gentle cycle and tumble dry on a low setting for 20 minutes to reactivate water repellency, making sure not to wring dry your product. Never use bleach or fabric softener and do not dry clean. Re-proof when necessary using FC-Free Nikwax products or you can use our online Lived & Loved service where we’ll do it for you.
We always recommend rinsing your swimwear with freshwater after use. Turn inside out before washing and use a gentle cycle on a cold wash or at 30°C, then hang to dry on the line, avoiding direct sunlight where possible. Do not tumble dry, dry clean or iron and please don’t use bleach or fabric softener.
As with all Finisterre products, a lot of attention and care has gone into making our wetsuits; seams, neoprene, construction and fit. In this respect, we warranty all seams and neoprene against defects in manufacturing and materials for the period of one year post purchase. Within this time, we are happy to be able to offer free repairs carried out by local expert wetsuit repairers. As we like to make sure all repairs are finished to the highest level, these repairs can take 3-4 weeks depending on the repair needed so just be aware that you might be without a suit for a while. You can purchase your repairs online through our dedicated Lived & Loved section. You'll then be sent a confirmation email containing a link to print out your free postage label for sending us your repairs. Once we've received your repairs, our dedicated repairs team will add years back into your garments, patching up scrapes and tears before returning them for your next adventure.
Please allow 3-6 weeks for your repair to take place, and be aware that October - January are our busiest times. Occasionally we may need some extra details from you regarding your repair, so make sure to keep an eye on your email inbox once you've sent us your repair.
